BETA ETA OMEGA CHAPTER HISTORY

Beta Eta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® is one of 96 chapters located in the “Great,” Great Lakes Region with chapters in Michigan, Ohio, Western New York, Western Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. Located in the Southern Ohio Cluster in Dayton, Ohio, Beta Eta Omega hosts an active membership of over 200 women and serves as the graduate chapter for Epsilon Chi, the undergraduate chapter at the University of Dayton and Wright State University. We are honored to be the home chapter of the late Ms. Bernice I. Sumlin, 19th International President and Mrs. Charlene Truitt-Nelson, 27th Great Lakes Regional Director.

Beta Eta Omega Chapter was chartered on June 8, 1934, by Great Lakes Regional Director, Mattie L. Jackson and International Secretary, Margaret Davis Bowen. The five trailblazing women who envisioned an organization committed to providing service to the Dayton metropolitan area included Jessie Hathcock and Lucie Taylor of Rho Omega Chapter, Carrie Shaw and Roberta Yancey from Alpha Chapter, and Ruth Wright from Omega Omega Chapter. Now, over 80 years later, Beta Eta Omega remains a stellar organization, still committed to that same vision of “Service to All Mankind” promulgated by our National Founders on January 15, 1908.

The 2022-2026 program focus of our International President, Danette Anthony Reed, focuses on “Soaring to Greater Heights of Service and Sisterhood.” Beta Eta Omega continues our current programs of service, some of which are the Al-Ka-Pals Youth Group, support of the Mary Scott Nursing Center, Susannah B. Ross/Hattie B. Wills Eighth Grade Recognition Program to honor the academic, leadership and civic accomplishments of our youth and the Linda Vista Project to assist and empower women suffering from abuse. We are proud of our sisterhood, our legacy, and our unwavering dedication to assist and support the many civic and community organizations in the Dayton area.
