The Al-ka-pals

Al-ka-pals

The Al-ka-pals  toured four states, KY, TN, AL, and GA visiting ten colleges and/universities, three museums, and two malls.  The universities were Kentucky State University, Tennessee State University, Fisk University, Lane  College, LeMoyne Owens College, Alabama A&M,  Miles College, Morehouse College, Spelman College, and Clark Atlanta University.

While in Memphis, TN  they visited Staxx Records Museum, Lorraine Hotel, and strolled and dined on Beale Street.

In Birmingham, AL they visited the Civil Rights Museum, Kelly Ingram Park, and the 16th Street Baptist Church with an inside tour of the church.

In Atlanta, GA they visited Rev Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr’s boyhood home and the King Center.

The students had a fulfilled, educational 4 days. Three participants were accepted on site to Alabama A&M because of exceptional test scores and transcripts.  The offer was made prior  to any interested students.  Application fees were waived for any who applied to the universities visited.  Their days were productive and tiring  for the chaperones.

The Al-Ka-Pals toured the Dayton Art Institute’s  special exhibition, 100 Years of the Arthur Prima Collection: African American Art” and the Art of Willie “Bing” Davis, Marking and Shaping the Past.  The members lunched at Café’ Monet. Joined by the artist, Bing Davis personalized the tour for the youths to explain and discuss his exhibit and pieces in the collection.

Al-Ka-Pals Celebrate

The Al-ka-Pals celebrated the end of another successful year with the membership’s last meeting of the year at Judge Arthur Fisher Park on June 5, 2011.  There was lots of excitement as they welcomed new members and guests from the recent Sussanah B. Ross/Hattie B. Wills 8th Grade Recognition ceremony. The picnic was enjoyed by youth and their parents who ate well, played games and enjoyed the early summer weather.

The “LION KING”  Roars

Always busy with activities in the Dayton community, 13 members of the Al-Ka-Pals met at the Victoria Theater for a dinner and program sponsored by the Theater Association to conclude the “Lion King” Project.  Following the dinner, the members experienced the fantastic musical.  The young men and women “loved the musical” and were thoroughly amazed by the costumes and presentation.
